Piano lessons

We teach piano lessons where students can either study for exams or simply for pleasure. We teach the full age range from children to adults.​We always aim to carefully select material for students beginning their studies. Different resources are used depending on the age of the beginner. We use simultaneous learning methods to enable a wide range of learning experiences with each piece being learned.​For exams we usually use the ABRSM examination syllabi for classical and jazz and would expect most students to complete an exam grade within two or three terms; this is after beginners have reached a basic level of competence.

Organ lessons

Students who wish to start organ lessons are advised that they should be at the middle grades of the piano. This is purely making sure that they have the keyboard technique ready to play. Students who are not at this stage should aim to improve their technique on the piano as it is much easier to master on that instrument.​We aim to progress students through the basic learning materials required to transfer to the organ in a year. This includes manual technique in modern legato playing and early detaché playing; this is combined with learning how to play the pedals. This is followed by teaching independence between the hands and feet; finally playing both hands and feet together. Studies are then focussed on the ABRSM higher grades and service playing skills.

Singing lessons

Singing lessons will focus on developing the voice for children to adults and either studying for exams or for pleasure. A wide range of repertoire can be studied including classical, folk songs.​Sight Singing is skill that many do not learn and then wish they had done so! How many singers wish they could pick up a song and just sing it?​We use a range of tried and tested material to build up the basic reading of music including notation, rhythm and pitching of sounds to the different notes. In addition to sight singing, aural training will also be given as part of the lessons.
